Media reports in Jakarta indicate Fredy Jayadi, 45, choked on a piece of wing while competing in the KFC sponsored eating event at a chain located in Taman Semanan in Cengkareng, West Jakarta.

According to Tempo, police are investigating the man’s death.

“When the incident happened, Fredy was taking part in the competition, which requires its participants to eat three chicken wings as fast as possible in five minutes,” an official with the local police was quoted as saying.

Jayadi was competing against two other participants when he reportedly started to choke on his third wing. He was treated at the scene by event organizers and taken to the nearest clinic, but a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.

The eating competition, which has been running since March 3, offers participants a chance to win a grand prize of 5 billion rupiah or $385,000 USD.
